Stranger Town
by Niamh Calderwood

First self-published in 2017.

Jessica Henry has left everything behind; her family, her country, her carefully constructed idea of herself as an artist, and moved to a small town in the North East of England to find out who she really is. What she finds instead is a cast of strangers: a painter with a broken heart, a boss who becomes her only friend, a woman on a motorbike who seems to know her better than she knows herself, and a series of losses she can’t outrun no matter how far she travels.

Stranger Town is a novel about chain reactions, the way a single act of love or cruelty ripples outward through lives we never see, and the strange, irreversible cost of connection. It is also, quietly, a ghost story.

Niamh Calderwood writes fiction; novels, novellas, and short stories. Her work is often about people who don’t belong to the world they’re supposed to belong to; autistic and queer perspectives, stories about estrangement and belonging.

Niamh is cautious about visibility but keeps returning to it anyway because her need to connect is stronger than her instinct to hide. She uses genre as a cover for psychological and emotional truth.
